Yesterday evening, 4th Mar, I fed Happy with some pieces of pears, after halfway through them, he started retching. What came out was extremely slimy and very thick, he had problem coughing them out as the vomit was 'hanging' from inside his mouth. I had to 'pull' the thick slime out from his mouth. This went on for a good 15-20mins, all the time thick slimy stuff were coming out and he tried to swallow them back as they hung inside his mouth. I had to open his mouth to dig them out!
He got so so exhausted from his constant vomiting that he had to lie down on his stomach. He became breathless and gasped for air. I had called the vet earlier on and was told they were not opened till 6pm. I couldnt wait any longer as he was very tired from vomiting / breathless.
As I wondered how I was going to drive him to the vet, I heard my nephew's voice when he got home. I called him and my 1st words were: - This is an emergency, I need you to take Hap and I to the vet. There was no time to waste. As the vet was on the other side of the road, I asked my nephew to drop us at the nearest point to the vet and I carried Hap and ran all the way to the vet. On arriving at the vet, the glass door had the a sign that said "closed". I didnt care, I knocked very hard at the glass door. A passer by saw the urgency / desperation on my face and signaled to me to just push the glass door. I did so and it opened, the bell sounded on opening and a lady came to me. I exclaimed: "this is an emergency". The vet upon hearing came forth from nowhere, immediately took Hap from me and tried to induce him to vomit more. When he didnt, they immediately checked his heart beat, took xrays and blood test. I was told his heart beat was FAINT and they immediately put an oxygen mask over his muzzle and gave him a drip.
They suggested putting him overnight to monitor him; I went thro a few choices with the vet and decided to wait with him to see if he would improve. They 'caged' him after removing the oxygen mask and I sat next to him.
Fortunately he returned to his normal self and the vet tested with a small portion of food to check if he would regurgitate. He didnt.
I decided not to board him and took him home so he could rest properly.
No only Hap was tired, I was from all this drama and trauma, seeing him breathless and gasping for air. It brought on the memory of late Fiffy who had also vomited and became breathless and passed on in my arms.
What a night!
